4/24/2020 7 Comments photography projectThese are the 3 photos I took to represent my view on the pandemic. Using the rule of thirds on my camera helped me the most to make my photos the best that they could be.
My use of minimal color on this project made the pictures seem more serious and sharp, instead of just normal photos. Using black and white made them also look more "clean', a common theme regarding this current situation we're all in. I used emphasis to maximize the focus on the main focal point of each photo (food, toilet paper/paper towels, gloves). The filters really helped with that, to draw the viewer's attention to what I want them to look at. Preparation and methods to stop the virus from getting into my home was my main inspiration for these photographs. Showing the abundance of products my family has emphasizes the serious precautions people have been taking to keep themselves safe. I find the idea was pretty successful, it was surprisingly easy to convey my viewpoint because of how much my family's prepared for this. I learned from this unit how to upgrade a photo from something taken on a phone camera to a genuinely good photo, with a focal point and detailed editing.

THE PORTRAITI drew a self portrait using Prismacolor pencils and graphite for the sweatshirt collar. The use of color was extremely vital in the process of coloring this piece. I mixed a variety of colors for the lips and skin to get the exact hues I wanted, and would resemble my reference photo the most. Proportion also played a large factor, because I had to make sure my facial features looked like the picture, and were in the right places on my face. The proportions of the face guidelines helped with that a lot. Every attempted self portrait I've made has never turned out well, so I wanted to challenge myself and make a realistic one. My piece shows this by actually looking similar to the picture and having realistic features. I found the hair really successful, even though I thought I wouldn't be able to do it. It turned out looking more textured and real than I would've ever thought. I learned how to draw realistically, and use different methods to achieve that realism. This project was really fun to work on, and I'm very proud of the results.
2/26/2020 0 Comments pencil drawing projectFor my first art project, I had to make 3 drawings of different items using 3 different drawing mediums. I've never really drawn objects, so this project really improved my abilities in drawing inanimate things. I like trying different mediums as well, and this project allowed me to get more comfortable with doing so. These pieces were hard to draw, to say the least. However, I did figure out some things I liked and did not like about each medium. First off, pen was so fun to work with because of the different ways I could shade, and the smoothness of the lines. However, it was much harder to make my object look dimensional and realistic with pen than with the other two pieces. I think it was because I couldn't really erase the pen, and the pen only has one value, not different ones for different values. My pencil drawing required a ton of detail, which was kind of irritating because I kept having to switch pencils constantly to find the perfect value. Other than that, my pencil drawing was my favorite to do because I was already familiar with pencil drawings and the medium itself. The charcoal drawing was confusing because I had never used any charcoal before that project, and it took a while to get things to look the way I wanted since I didn't really understand how different charcoals worked, or how to shade with charcoal. The process was a lot faster than the other two pieces, though. Since charcoal can be wiped away really easily and blended back to the background color, no one could see my mistakes and I could try as many times as I wanted to, to perfect and fix things in my drawing. My favorite warm up would have to have been the different hatching cubes. Before learning hatching, I didn't know anything about creating an entire drawing using only pen. Also, I've never seen hatching used before until this warm up. I just really love how much dimension doing these simple methods can add to a drawing, and it was the most useful warm up for me thus far. Without that warm up, I highly doubt my pen drawing would've turned out as good as it did. compositionComposition is the placement or arrangement of a subject(s) in an art piece. It is how the different parts of an art piece are organized. valueValue is the lightness or darkness of a color. Value can vary in different art pieces, and light and dark values are typically mixed to add dimension and depth to something.
2/13/2020 0 Comments PAOLA DELFÍnMY INSPIRED ARTISTPaola Delfín is an amazing artist that creates massive murals depicting unity and community. She’s based in Mexico, but her murals can be found in various cities around the world, such as Cancun and St. Petersburg. Her desire is always to leave something “meaningful” for people to see when they pass by her artwork. Her use of various grays, monochromatic themes and striking realism give depth and life to her pieces, which hooked me in. The life and detail in her murals makes you feel like the people she’s created are real and looking down at you. Instead of just making a mural for the looks, she researches the community she’s working in, the history and the people of that community. She also has a recurring theme of women’s strength in her murals, contributing to people connecting with her art on a more personal level. Delfín uses both paint and brushes as well as spray paint to create her giant works.
What interested me the most is how she not only creates beautiful art, but also adds a deeper meaning to it at the same time. The way she uses her paint to tell a story amazes me, and inspires me to do the same with my own work. She emphasizes that even though the art is important, the story behind it is what will truly resonate with people. This method she uses to get inspiration for her murals sets her apart from other artists I’ve heard of and makes her unique. |
